To Be or Not To Be

Holla-Holla everyone.

Nice to meet all of you again. So how's life? Hope you are enjoying it as I am. Thank God for His blessing to all mankind. Actually I'm having my crucial time in this month of October and this up coming November. You know why? It's because the examination is around the corner!!! Fuhhh! Such a drill for us where we only have around two weeks left but I still find myself lost in the middle of it.

Apart from that exam thing, I am having a good evening today. My friend, Anisah and I are enjoying our so called leisure time with some movies. I am not that kind of person who loves to watch movie, but I think I have to in order to know more about 'literature'. That's my friend's answer if I asked her why. Back to the movies, they are entitled "Final Destination 5" and "The Vow". Both are contradicting to each other where one is extremely a tragedy whereas the other one is very romantic. Who had seen them before? Awesome right? By the way, don't ask me about the casting. I already forget about them as I don't really care about their names. (Fell bad for them) But truly, they have shown their best skills throughout the movies.

Love is the common theme every film or movie should have besides poems, short stories and novels. Love means life. To love is to life and to life is to love. Get it? Everyone will have their own love story as everyone has their own life. That's how love and live are connected. Do not denied that each one of you is hoping for a better life with full of loves, isn't? Got you! :) From both movies, I prefer more on "The Vow" as it suits my heart. That's mean I'm an emotional person. Yeahh...

"The Vow" itself has given us a message or a symbol of promises. One who already promise something need to keep his words till the end. That is what the hero, Leo is doing. Even though his only lovely wife, Paige has lost her memory in an accident, he still accept her regardless of her sickness. Can you imagine that a person whom you love the most has changed  and even now cannot recognise you? Pity Leo. Besides of his characters who always cool and he is also quite handsome, the value of loyalty is being emphasized on his role. Now I wonder if I could get a guy which can be loyal as he is. Leo, with patience, is still hoping for his wife to get back her memory- the precious times they had together. Until the day they separated, Leo still remembered her. Such a sweet of him. To know what happen next, watch it yourself. Haha...:)

His message to all of us, "Time is an impact. Remember all the moments since you still have the chance as one day you may forget all of them." Something like that but not accurately similar. :')

From me, appreciate everyone around you as many as you could because anything can happen in the future without us to expect it to be happened.

Lots of love,
FriendOfHeaven.

Assalamualailkum...
Before I continue on my writing, I want to apologize if there is any grammatical error in this article...^^

First of all, it has been quite a long time I don't write on my blog. Why ? Just a simple answer. I am having a busy week lately and now is my Ls time. We are given a chance to do our task. So I take this opportunity to update my blog since I don't have time to look at it out from my Ls time.

So, how are you? I hope all of you are in the pink of health. Today's topic will be on friendship. Who is friend? Is friend important in our life? Ask yourself. Who can live without a company in this world? Who can continue life without being socialized? Yes. Friend means socialize. How many friends do you have? One? Two? Or as many as you can't count any more. But among those friends, whose is your true friend? Which you preferred the most? The one who is dared to show your mistakes or the one who is only can please you? Both is a good friend right? But which one loves you more?

For me, I really appreciate my friends. I want a friend who can understand me better without me to say anything. Till today, I'm looking forward for "them". I still remember my secondary teacher's saying. "Friends you have during your childhood are totally different compared to those you have when you are getting matured". I agreed with her. Now, I am learning in the higher institute and what I can say is that we ourselves need to be good friend if we want to have friends which are good. Simple saying. What you give, you'll get it back.

That's all for today.
Hope you can be a good friend of your friends.
Nobody is perfect.

Last 2 Weeks Task

1.    Causes of air pollution

·         Emissions from industries and manufacturing activities
-There are long tubes (called chimneys) erected high into the air, with lots of smoke and fumes coming out of it. Waste incinerators, manufacturing industries and power plants emit high levels of carbon monoxide, organic compounds, and chemicals into the air. This happens almost everywhere that people live. Petroleum refineries also release lots of hydrocarbons into the air.
·         Burning Fossil Fuels
-After the industrial age, transportation has become a key part of our lives. Cars and heavy duty trucks, trains, shipping vessels and air planes all burn lots of fossil fuels to work. Emissions from automobile engines contain both primary and secondary pollutants.
-Fumes from car exhaust contain dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, hydrocarbons and particulates. On their own, they cause great harm to people who breathe them. Additionally, they react with environmental gases to create further toxic gases.
·         Household and Farming Chemicals
-Crop dusting, fumigating homes, household cleaning products or painting supplies, over the counter insect/pest killers, fertiliser dust emit harmful chemicals into the air and cause pollution.

2.    Advantages of using the Internet

·         Assortment of Information
-Lots of information of different kinds is kept on the web server on the Net.  This means that millions web sites include various data in the shape of images and text.  On every subject of the planet information can be easily collected by you. For this function, special sites, called search engines can be found on the Internet to search data of each and every subject of the planet.
·         On line Medical Guidance
-Several web sites will also be on the Web to obtain details about various conditions.  You are able to consult with a cell of on-line physicians to obtain guidance about any medical problem.  In addition, lots of material can also be on the Web for research in medical industry.
·         Looking for Jobs
·         Communication
-keep in touch with other through Internet all over the world
·         Information
·         On line Training
-Several web sites of different colleges offer lessons and classes on different subjects or subjects.  You may also obtain these classes or lessons in your personal computer.
·         Advertisement

3.    Effect of Gambling

·         Impact on Families
-The most common problem is the loss of money. Savings, property or belongings may suddenly be lost. This kind of money crisis makes the family feel scared, angry and betrayed.
·         Emotional Problems and Isolation
-Family members may feel ashamed, hurt, afraid, angry, confused and distrustful. These feelings make it harder to solve problems.
-Many partners do not want to be emotionally or physically close with the person who has hurt them.
·         Physical and Mental Health
-Anxiety, depression and stress-related problems such as poor sleep, ulcers, bowel problems, headaches and muscle pains.
·         Burnout
-One member may try to keep things in control by taking on more tasks. This can lead to burnout.
-Family members often focus on the person with gambling problems, and forget to take care of themselves or to have fun.
·         Impact on Children
-Children can feel forgotten, depressed and angry and they may believe they caused the problem.
-Children take care of younger brothers or sisters, or try to support their parent. This responsibility causes children stress.
-Children may also believe they must take sides between their parents. They may stop trusting a parent who makes promises he or she doesn’t keep.
·         Physical and Emotional Abuse
-Family violence is more common when families are in crisis.
·         Anxiety and Depression
-This can make sleeping, thinking and solving problems more difficult.
·         Suicide Risk
-The people most likely to attempt suicide are those who also have a mental health problem (such as depression) or who use alcohol or other drugs. People who have threatened suicide or hurt themselves in the past are also more at risk.

4. Importance of being frugal

·         Frugality inspires an attitude of gratitude and contentment
-Frugal living makes you appreciate what you have and helps you to realise that you are blessed to have it, even if it’s not the newest luxury what-not. This makes for a far more content life, rather than a life spent straining and whining for the latest thing.
·         You gain a better perspective on what “enough” really is
-Frugal living teaches you that “enough” is not the newest luxury car, but a functional car (or no car at all, if you live in an area where that’s possible). “Enough” is not the latest gadget, but a loving family and food on the table. It helps you realise that you probably have “enough” and that there are a lot of people who don’t.
·         You’re teaching the next generation.
-If you model a frugal lifestyle for your kids, chances are they’ll go on to live a more frugal lifestyle and teach their kids the same. You can’t beat giving your kids a head start on good money management skills at a young age.
·         You become more creative
-Making do with what you have and reducing spending requires you to more creative to get the most out of what you have.
·         It teaches the art of compromise
-Frugal people learn that you can’t always have everything you want, but you can have some of what you want. The daily compromise between buying store brand ketchup and name brand, or between buying a new bedspread and mending the old one, all so you can have more money for something else, teaches us how to compromise to get more of what we really want.

5. Reasons for learning a foreign language

·         Brain Fitness
-Recent medical studies bring attention to the positive effects learning a foreign language has on the health of the human brain. Studies by York University of Alzheimer's patients demonstrated that those who were bilingual had a significant delay in the onset of the disease compared to their monolingual counterparts. Other studies concerning the health of monolingual and bilingual patients' brains showed that the effects of dementia were less advanced in bilingual patients even though their brains showed more brain damage as a result of the disease.
·         Job Preservation
-Knowledge of a foreign language is equally useful for maintaining employment, particularly in industries where companies look to relocate business or expand into other markets. This is because downsized or outsourced employees who speak the language of the country where the company plans to relocate can gain an advantage in the race to be appointed to a post in the new location. Knowledge of the language of the region where your company is expanding into new markets can make you indispensable to the success of the business as you bridge the cultural gap between the two locations.
·         Family Ties and Networks
-Knowing a foreign language can help keep your extended family intact while also expanding your network of contacts. For example, if your family came to the United States during World War II from Germany, you may also have family members who remained in Germany and others who migrated to places like Argentina and Chile; therefore knowing Spanish and German will help you stay in contact with those family members and will also be useful in conducting any genealogical research about your ancestry. On social networking sites, members speak many languages and live all over the globe; knowing another language permits you to reach people who would not necessarily be in your network due to the difference in language. This enlarges the geographical scope of your relationships and enables you to expand your business and personal contacts.
·         Additional Compensation
-Some employers are willing to offer additional compensation to employees who have verifiable foreign language competency, particularly if such languages are in high demand like Arabic, Urdu or Farsi. For example, the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Language Services Section is dedicated to providing linguists across the law enforcement community to offer translation and other language services. The FBI has developed a special program -- Foreign Language Incentive Pay -- that awards additional compensation to employees who have certified foreign language proficiency in critical foreign languages.

FIRST ARTICLE
“Educating M’sia the right way” by P. Gunasegaram
·         The bad effect of abolishing these exams is we will have no clue as to the standard of our students until they reach Form Five.
·         We need UPSR and PMR at least as a gauge to measure the standard of our students.
·         We should look at other means to reduce the emphasis on exams by introducing year-long programmes which are project-based and will take into account extra-curricular activities.
·         Suggestion for better education system:
1.    Better quality of teachers
2.    Ensure a minimal standard of physical facilities.
3.    A syllabus that reflects holistic education.
4.    Real emphasis on extra-curricular activities.
5.    Single-session schools.
6.    Provisions for English Language education.
7.    Provisions for mother tongue education.
8.    Less politicisation and greater professionalization of education.
9.    Continuity of planning- 20- years plans will be good.
10. Keep up to date with education everywhere.

SECOND ARTICLE
“SCHOOL-BASED ASSESSMENT: Will it spur healthy competition?” by Harintharavimal Balakrishnan
·         PBS is holistic and assesses the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains, encompassing the intellectual, emotional, spiritual and physical aspects.
·         Teachers are given due recognition and have the autonomy to conduct formative assessment during the learning process and also summative assessment at the conclusion of a learning unit or any other suitable time during the school year at their own discretion, taking into account their pupil’s readiness.
·         Four components in PBS
Component
Explanation
Central assessment
Tasks set by the Examination Syndicate but administered and graded by teachers
School assessment
Set, administered, graded and reported by school
Psychometric assessment
Measures pupil’s innate and acquired abilities
Assessment of physical
Sport and co-curricular activities

·         Four reasons why PBS need to be implemented:
·         Enhance the meaningfulness of assessment

·         Reduce the over-reliance on data (grades and scores)
·         Empower the school and teachers to conduct quality assessment of pupil
·         Ensure the performance  of pupils is comparable to world standard

·         Learners’ achievements are reported as:
Band One
Knows
Band Two
Knows and understands
Band Three
Able to apply knowledge
Band Four
Ability to solve an elementary mathematical operation using the correct protocol
Band Five
Learners’ ability to solve problems
Band Six
Ability to make value judgement and is creative or innovative in solving mathematical problems

·         No matter how well organised and well planned PBS might appear to be, the evaluation is still too subjective.
o   The schools may differ in the way they grade their students
o   Previous system encouraged pupils to score higher to improve their performance in a subject.
o   Lack of proper introduction on PBS to parents means they may not able to play an important role to support the system.
o   The streaming system via PBS is still ambiguous.
o   The ability of PBS to fill the gap left by the previous teaching system is questionable.

THIRD ARTICLE
“Designing and Using Tools for Educational Assessment” by Madhabi Chatterji
Subtopic: Sources of Random Error in Assessment Situation
·         Random errors can also come from the individuals being assessed, as their concentration, motivation, fatigue, or interest in the assessment activity fluctuates during the assessment process.
·         Random errors can be rooted in a poorly constructed tool and badly written direction or uncontrolled assessment.
·         Ways to overcome:
1.    Obtaining an adequate sample of behaviours
o   Refers to the number of items, tasks, observation or behaviour samples.
o   The greater the number of observations, items, tasks in assessment, the greater the dependability of the results, and the higher the quantitative estimates of reliability.
2.    Controlling errors in assessment conditions
o   If the timing for or environment in which the assessment is conducted distracts test-takers, random fluctuations in performance unrelated to the trait being measured can result.
o   It makes sense to alter the time or conditions of test administration to improve reliability of results.
o   Unreliability in result can caused by sudden changes in the temperature in the room, sounds in the environment, the mental state or metabolism, inadequacies in directions or materials.
o   Incorporate human observers or scorers within the assessment system: human beings are fallible and inconsistent.
o   Cause for low reliability:
Some Sources Of Random Measurement Error
-Too few items, tasks, or behaviour samples are collected to obtain a consistent reading of where a person stands on a construct domain.
-Distractions or poor conditions in the assessment environment cause respondents to fluctuate in their concentration or focus.
-Misleading or inadequate directions cause inconsistencies in how respondent react to the items.
-Persons who take the assessment behave inconsistently during the process due to random causes outside the control of assessor
-Inadequate time is allocated for assessing all or most of the examinees.
-Subjectivity or random biases of raters or observers affect the consistency of the result.

FOURTH ARTICLE
“Scrapping UPSR & PMR A Good Move?” by Tony Pua
·         The abolishment is part of government efforts to restructure the learning system that as seen as too examination oriented and failed to provide a holistic education.
·         Its noble objective is to avoid producing machines.
·         Why should be retained?
1.    First changing the teaching systems to encourage creativity, critical thinking and innovation.
o   If the quality and ability of the teachers remain unchanged, then quality of output will make little difference.
o   This is because of lack of a standardised assessment system and lack of objective measurement.
2.    The nature of questions.
o   If the examination questions are oriented towards memorised answers, then understandably the students will be focused on memorising answer.
o   Use HOT (High Order Thinking) questions to encourage greater critical thinking.
FIFTH ARTICLE
“Improvements in Exam Results are The Best Way to Evaluate Teachers” in www.suttontrust.com
·         Study by Richard Murphy, Testing Teachers shows that the contribution that teachers make to improving exam and test results is the most reliable way to predict a teacher’s long term success.
·         Most common ways of assessing teachers:
1.    Improvements in pupils test scores
2.    Student surveys
3.    Classroom observations
·         The evaluation are more effective when value added score are combined with other classroom measures, such as observations.
·         Schools should distinguish between observing teachers to help them improve and doing so to assess their performance.
·          10 Tips for effective evaluation of teachers:
School should not rely on one single approach to teacher appraisal or evaluation.
A clear system should be developed: fairly and consistency.
External advice should be used: to assess the quality and standard of school’s system and staff’s fairness.
Staff session should be used to discuss the new system.

Staff involved should be properly trained.
Good feedback: proper one to one discussion
Evaluation focus on classroom activity and teachers’ contributions
Value added or progress measures should be used in evaluation performance.
Evaluation carried out separately to promote honest feedback.
Pupil surveys should be clearly structured.
