CHAPTER 15
SUMMARY
In the second year of Okonkwo's exile, Obierika came to Mbanta. With him two bags of cowries were brought from Umuofia for Okonkwo. He helped Okonkwo to sell his yams in Umuofia. He and his two young men then saluted Uchendu, the eldest of Okonkwo's mother kinsmen in his obi. As usual, they were presented with kola nuts and a pot of wine. They were having conversation until the news of Abame became their main topic. Obierika told them about the massacre of Abame's people in a market and most of them ran to Umuofia for life. This was happened after a white man with an iron horse was killed because the Oracle had said so.
SIGNIFICANT EVENT
- The Visit by Obierika to Okonkwo
This event is significant because it shows the real value of a true friend. A true friend will never ignore or discard his friend. A friend will always be there whenever we have a problem. As for Okonkwo, Obierika was a good friend of him. Obierika always help him. For example, there was a time when Okonkwo's yams were not good planted and he offered his seeds to Okonkwo. Okonkwo was very grateful for it. Besides, his visit to Mbanta shows that Obierika is a true friend. Even though Okonkwo had been exiled and lost his title in Umuofia but Obierika still met him and even helped him to sell his yams.
- The killing of a white man in Abame
This event is significant because it is a sign of arrival of white men to the village. The Oracle had consulted the people of Abame that the white men were like locusts and they were on their way to the village. They were believed would spread destruction among Abame's people. The white man with his iron horse was believed sent by his friends to explore the village so then he was killed by the people of Abame. This event is meaningful because without it there are two things that might happen. The first one is if the white man was not killed, probably the arrival of the missionaries may not as drastic as this. Secondly, the people of Abame may not been killed. The white men have no reason to use violent over them as they are not harmful to them.
